Music Theory for the Bass Player is a comprehensive and immediately applicable guide to making you a well-grounded groover, informed bandmate and all-around more creative musician.

Have you always wanted to learn music theory but felt it was too overwhelming a task? Perhaps all the books seem to be geared toward pianists or classical players? Do you know lots of songs, but don’t know how the chords are put together or how they work with the melody? If so, this is the book for you!

Starting with intervals as music’s basic building blocks, you will explore scales and their modes, chords and the basics of harmony. Packed with fretboard diagrams, musical examples and exercises, more than 180 pages of vital information are peppered with mind-bending quizzes, effective mnemonics, and compelling learning approaches. Extensive and detailed photo demonstrations show why relaxed posture and optimized fingering are vital for good tone, timing and chops. You can even work your way through the book without being able to read music!

This is the definitive resource for the enthusiastic bassist!

The Bass Pattern System is the fast track to getting the bass neck under your belt.

A systematic approach the pattern system…:
• is the way to knowing the fretboard in all areas of the bass equally well.
• helps you get intervals, triads and four note chords under your fingertips
• teaches you to think ahead while playing something else (just like it occurs in music)
• frees you to improvise without restrictions
• is a great technical workout
• is a comprehensive visual as well as kinesthetic learning system
• can be practiced effectively away from the instrument
• will greatly improve your ability to focus

Ariane Cap is a rising star on the International music scene. From jazz to progressive rock to world music, Ariane is quickly establishing herself as the go-to bassist for recordings sessions and live performances. She has been immersed in music from the age of six, studied at the most prestigious schools along with private instruction from the likes of Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey, Chuck Rainey, and many other giants of bass.

Fortunately for we students of guitar, Ariane is also a gifted and passionate educators and we’re thrilled to welcome her to the family with her first TrueFire course, Pentatonic Playground for Bass.

“Pentatonics are powerful building blocks for hip grooves, exciting fills, cool solos and catchy melodies for blues, jazz, rock, pop, country, latin and virtually any contemporary style of music. In this course, I’ll show you five very versatile pentatonic shapes and then give you a systematic approach for applying those five shapes, all over the neck, in a variety of musical contexts.”

Ariane organized the course into three sections. In the first section, you’ll explore the sounds and basics of the major and minor pentatonic scale. Then in section two, Ariane shows you five patterns: Pattern 1: The Hexagon, Pattern 2: The Boot, Pattern 3: Big Box, Little Box, Pattern 5: Little Box/Big Box and Pattern 6: Upside Down Boot (no typo here there is no Pattern 4 and you’ll learn why in the course).

For each position, you’ll learn key features, exercises to get your kinesthetic memory in gear, a creative groove-and-fill exercise, and a featured bass line that maximizes the characteristic potential of each position.

In the third and final section, everything you learned in the previous sections will be put to work as you play your way through 12 Application Studies: 5 Patterns Workout: Major, 5 Patterns Workout: Minor, Horizontal Connections, Diagonal Connections, Fills with Fourths and Fifths, Single String Fingerings, Transposing Into All 12 Keys, Chord Qualities & Pentatonics, Pentatonics & The Blues, Soloing: Minor Pentatonics, Soloing: Major Pentatonics, and Playing Progressions.

Ariane demonstrates over rhythm tracks and breaks it all down by stepping you through the key concepts, techniques and creative approaches she uses in the Application Studies.

All of the key examples and performances are tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes. You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop and/or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, Ariane generously includes all of the rhythm tracks for you to work with on your own.

Grab your bass and let’s get our pentatonic groove on with Ariane Cap!
